What Are Havanese Like to Live With?
Delightful, and easier than most small breeds. Havanese are cheerful, adaptable, and people-oriented without being fragile or yappy. They’re clever and trainable, they do well with children and other pets, and they’re as content in an apartment as anywhere, provided they’re with you.
The one real requirement is company. This is a breed that was made to be a companion, and they take it to heart, so they don’t love being alone for long stretches and can develop separation anxiety if routinely left. A home with someone around, or another pet, suits them best.
Their coat is beautiful and does need real upkeep, brushing several times a week to prevent mats, or a shorter trim to keep it simple. Plenty of Havanese owners opt for the puppy cut and never look back.
Is the Havanese a Healthy Breed?
For the most part, yes, and it’s a fair question to lead with.
The Havanese is one of the more robust small breeds, and many live long, uncomplicated lives into their teens. There’s no single defining disease the way there is with a Cavalier or a Doberman. What exists instead is a short list of things worth a routine eye, most of them manageable, and none of them looming over the breed.
That’s genuinely the story here, and we’d rather say so plainly than invent drama. A Havanese owner’s main jobs are good routine care, weight, teeth, and coat, rather than bracing for something specific.
What Do We Watch For in the Havanese?
- Eyes. Cataracts and other inherited conditions appear in the breed, so cloudiness or vision changes are worth a check.
- Knees. Patellar luxation is the most common orthopedic issue, showing up as a skip or hitch in the back legs.
- Hips. Some Havanese develop a hip condition called Legg-Calvé-Perthes, usually showing as hind-leg lameness in a young dog.
- Ears. Hair grows in the canals and holds moisture, so they need routine cleaning to head off infection.
- Teeth. Like all small breeds, they’re prone to dental crowding and early periodontal disease, which makes home brushing genuinely worthwhile.
- Hearing. Some lines carry congenital deafness, which a simple test can identify.
How Do I Keep My Havanese Healthy?
Stay on top of the coat, brush the teeth, keep the ears dry and clean, and keep up with routine wellness visits. Keep them at a sensible weight and give them the company they crave. This is a breed where consistent basics tend to produce a long, cheerful, low-drama life, which is rather the point of them.
